Man in Court on Golliwog Charges

A Prestatyn man has appeared before Llandudno Magistrates' Court after a passer-by took offence to the golliwog doll hanging in his upstairs window.

Jason Wakefield-Jones, 50, of Bastion Road, Prestatyn, denied causing racially-aggravated harassment, alarm or distress to Sally Harland, contrary to section 31 of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. The offence was said to have occurred on 4th January 2018.

Wakefield-Jones was granted unconditional bail until his trial next month.

For reasons that may become apparent in the future, this is quite an unusual case. There will no doubt be some interesting legal arguments advanced by the defence about how offensive a golliwog doll actually is and how visible the doll was.

We shall provide an update of how the trial goes.
